At low tide, the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel becomes something else entirely. The sea retreats miles across the flats, leaving behind a landscape of sinuous channels and silver sand — a place that is neither land nor sea, that changes with every tide and looks different in every light. Philip Plisson photographed it from above, at dusk, the horizon glowing gold beneath a deep blue-violet sky. The result is one of his most meditative images: vast, quiet, and strangely beautiful.
The Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has the largest tidal range in continental Europe. At low tide, the exposed flats stretch for kilometres — and the channels left by the retreating water carve patterns that look, from the air, almost like brushstrokes. Plisson, France’s foremost marine photographer, understood this. He waited for the light.
