A Smart Turnout is a rare original vintage lithograph after an oil on canvas painting by an unknown American Folk Artist (circa 1845). A black sleigh adorned with an elegant swan-neck glides across a snow-covered winter landscape, drawn by a matched pair of black and brown horses. A well-dressed gentleman turns to meet the viewer's gaze while his companion remains poised beneath her hat, her face a quiet mystery.

Historically, a "turnout" referred to a horse-drawn carriage together with its horses, harness, and driver. A "smart" turnout meant the entire ensemble was clean, elegant, and meticulously well-appointed — and this one is exactly that.

The original oil on canvas resides in the permanent collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut — one of the oldest public art museums in the United States.
