Martin Johnson Heade's original painting ,was created in 1871, the original is an oil on mahogany panel measuring 34.8 cm × 45.6 cm (13.7 in × 18.0 in) and is housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The artwork depicts an opulent pink orchid with light-green stems and pods dominating the left foreground, set against a lush jungle backdrop where lichen covers dead branches, moss drips from trees, and a blue-gray mist veils the distant jungle. On the right, a Sappho Comet with a green body and brilliant red tail feathers perches near a nest, while two green-and-pink Brazilian Amethysts hover nearby.
