Grande Semaine d’Aviation de la Champagne is a landmark piece of aviation history — a poster by Ernest Montaut advertising the world’s first international air meet, held in Reims, France, from August 22 to 29, 1909.
The event took place just one month after Louis Blériot’s historic first flight across the English Channel, and drew over 500,000 visitors including French President Armand Fallières and British Chancellor David Lloyd George. It was a defining moment in the birth of modern aviation.
Montaut’s image captures the wonder of the age: a woman in a flowing purple dress waves at a fleet of early aircraft — monoplanes, biplanes, balloons, and dirigibles — soaring over the Reims skyline against a glowing sunset sky.
