It is summer on the Seine, and the light is doing everything. Monet painted Le Bassin d’Argenteuil in 1872, during the years he lived in the riverside town that would become the cradle of Impressionism. The scene is unhurried: promenaders stroll a tree-lined path, sailboats drift on the glittering water, and a bridge anchors the middle distance. But the real subject is the sky — a vast, billowing expanse of cloud and blue that fills more than half the canvas and seems to breathe.
This is Monet at the height of his Argenteuil period, before the movement had a name, painting the world as sensation rather than fact. The original hangs in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
