Rare Vintage Exhibition Poster — Printed in Italy, 1999
A lush, sun-dappled path winds through the Luxembourg Garden in Paris. A man in a pale suit with a cane faces a woman in a straw hat, red skirt, and parasol, with a classical statue standing between them. Other figures stroll further along the path, captured in Rousseau's signature dreamlike, flattened style.
This original vintage poster was published for the landmark exhibition I Cento Capolavori dell'Ermitage: Impressionisti e Avanguardie (The Hundred Masterpieces of the Hermitage: Impressionists and Avant-Gardes), held at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, Italy — celebrating the grand public opening of the newly renovated former papal stables — from December 22, 1999 to June 11, 2000.
The exhibition was historically significant as the first time the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg allowed such a large and essential core of its French modernist collection to travel outside Russia. Many of the works had been acquired after the Russian Revolution from the legendary private collections of Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov. In the Luxembourg Garden (1909) has been part of the Hermitage's permanent collection ever since.
