Paul Klee painted Erinnerung an einen Garten — Memory of a Garden — in 1914, the year his journey to Tunisia transformed his relationship with colour forever. The canvas is a patchwork of luminous squares: blues, greens, ochres, purples, and warm browns, each patch alive with delicate marks — stylised trees, dotted foliage, cross-like forms, a latticed wheel at the centre. It is a garden remembered, not depicted: assembled from sensation and symbol rather than observation.
1914 was a pivotal year for Klee. “Colour has taken hold of me,” he wrote after Tunisia. “I and colour are one.” This work is evidence of that transformation — a painting that feels less like a landscape than like the memory of one, filtered through joy.
