The contrast is immediate and total: one face covered entirely in tattoos — intricate, layered, obsessive — cradling a smooth, unmarked head in tattooed hands. Len Prince’s Robert and Michael is a portrait of tattoo artists Robert Sherman and Michael Wilson, but it reads as something larger: a meditation on skin as canvas, on identity worn on the outside.
Shot in 1991 and published as an exhibition poster for Staley-Wise Gallery in New York City, this is a rare piece of photography history. Staley-Wise is one of the most respected photography galleries in the world, known for championing fashion and portrait photographers of the highest calibre. Prince’s work appeared there at the height of his career.
The black-and-white palette strips the image down to pure form and texture — the dense, almost hallucinatory tattoo work rendered in extraordinary detail against the stark studio background.
